A SCHOOL OF ADVAITA
Organizational Principles
Home Contact Schedule Open House

  1. PURPOSE:  We are a community that practices and teaches Advaita philosophy as a way of life.

  2. ACTIVITIES:  We offer regular classes, retreats and short courses related to Advaita and similar philosophies, in small and large group settings. We respect and support the tradition of Advaita and its living teachers.

  3. ORGANIZATION:  We are a nonprofit organization, run entirely by volunteers, which consists of a student body, a voting Membership, an elected Board, and a Senior Tutor. Our governance reflects the tradition of Advaita, while maintaining a democratic process characterized by the sharing of information, joint decision making, and broad accountability.

  4. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:  Students support the community through their spiritual practice and well-intentioned participation. In addition to tuition and activity fees, students are invited to meet organizational needs by voluntary service and donations.

  5. FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Students entrusted as tutors hold the welfare of those in their care as the most important aspect of their service. They 'practice what they preach', and teach by example rather than precept. Tutors encourage critical thinking, individual autonomy and self reliance. Faculty / student interactions take place within reasonable, ethical and mutually agreeable boundaries.

  6. SELF-DETERMINATION:  Reason and direct personal experience are the most important factors for confirmation of Advaita principles. Each student determines his or her own beliefs, practices, participation and trust in the organization. This process is supported by open and free discussion and debate.

  7. OPENNESS:  We are open about our philosophy, organizational aims and spiritual practices. We welcome anyone who wishes to join us in the study and practice of Advaita philosophy.

These principles express our sincere intentions, but they create no legal or other obligation for PFI or any of its volunteers or participants.
